When I was eight, I memorized entire pages of How It Works: The Computer, a battered Ladybird book I’d covered in red felt-tip annotations. I could recite the CPU diagrams, explain binary code and build cardboard computers with hairdryers for cooling. That book taught me how memory really works: we don’t just remember facts, we remember what we touch, what we struggle with, what matters enough to mark up. 

Today, I watch CEOs and leaders frantically searching their phones for the strategy framework they “definitely saved somewhere.” Teams rebuild solutions they created months ago because no one remembers where they stored the original. We’re living through the Great Forgetting, and it’s costing us.

The hidden cost of digital amnesia

Digital amnesia isn’t just about forgetting where you saved that presentation. It’s the erosion of your cognitive infrastructure: the mental models, patterns and insights that separate exceptional leaders from average ones.

McKinsey estimates that knowledge workers spend 1.8 hours daily searching for information. But the real cost isn’t time, it’s the loss of institutional memory that drives competitive advantage. When your team repeatedly solves the same problems because they can’t recall previous solutions, you’re not just inefficient. You’re vulnerable.

I know a strategy consultant who spent eight months rewriting his book on organizational change.  Halfway through, he rediscovered the original manuscript from two years earlier. It wasn’t just complete. It was better. Sharper insights, clearer frameworks, more confident voice. He’d forgotten his own best thinking. He could have shipped two years ago.  

This happens everywhere — marketing teams rework campaigns they have already tested. Executives make the same decision again. Consultants rehash frameworks they once refined. When everything is saved but nothing is retained, progress becomes accidental.  

Why digital tools make it worse

We’ve been sold a lie: that perfect storage equals perfect memory. It doesn’t. Your overstuffed Notion workspace isn’t a second brain; it’s a digital junk drawer. Those “read later” articles aren’t waiting to be reviewed; they’re digital hoarding.  

Storage is not understanding. Search is not synthesis. And AI summaries, while efficient, can make it worse. They compress knowledge without embedding it. Outsourcing your thinking dulls your cognitive edge. The friction that forms real understanding disappears.  

The tools we think are helping us remember are actually training us to forget. Everything becomes equally searchable, which means nothing feels worth remembering.  

The neuroscience of remembering

Your brain remembers what you work for. Research from Frontiers in Psychology shows that handwriting activates significantly more neural pathways than typing, creating stronger memory consolidation. When you write by hand, you’re forced to synthesize and prioritize: your brain can’t keep up with typing speed, so it has to choose what matters.  

Physical reading creates spatial memory. You remember not just the idea, but where it appeared on the page, how the paper felt, what you were thinking when you made that note in the margin. This isn’t nostalgia, it’s how human memory evolved to work. 

The same principles apply to leadership thinking. The frameworks you sketch on whiteboards stick better than the ones you build in Miro. The strategies you debate over printed documents get remembered longer than the ones you review on screens. Physical friction creates cognitive traction. 

The competitive edge of remembering

In an age of infinite information, the scarce resource isn’t access — it’s retention. The leaders who remember their best thinking can build on it. Those who don’t are condemned to repeat their worst mistakes. 

Your competitive advantage lies not in what you can Google, but in what you can recall at the moment of decision. The pattern you noticed three months ago. The insight that emerged from last quarter’s failure. The connection between two seemingly unrelated problems.  

This is why the most effective leaders I know still use notebooks. Not because they’re Luddites, but because they understand that memory is a muscle. Use it or lose it.  

Practical experiments that help

Try these: 

  • Create physical artifacts. Print your most important thinking and mark it up. Carry a notebook. Make frameworks tangible. When something’s worth printing, it’s worth remembering.  
  • Build memory rituals. Host a monthly pattern-recognition session. Archive your team’s breakthrough ideas. Design ways to remember together.  
  • Curate, don’t hoard. Before saving another digital item, ask: “Will I actually review this?” If not, delete or summarize it by hand. Treat your tools like a library, not a landfill.   

The goal isn’t to become a digital minimalist. It’s to become a cognitive maximalist — someone who extracts lasting value from temporary information.

The choice

Every day, you choose. Remembering or storing, thinking or collecting and building cognitive strength or sliding into digital dependence. Your childhood self didn’t need a perfect file system. They needed curiosity, friction and something worth remembering. That’s still true. 

In a world designed to make everything forgettable, your ability to remember (and help others remember) is your greatest strategic edge.
